Men's League Format

For any questions or queries about the Men’s League, please feel free to contact the Men’s League Convenor, Carey Low at clow@mandagroup.com

Men's league runs every week on Tuesday and Wednesday nights with two time slots each night, 7:00 pm and 8:15 pm. Please make every effort to show up on time or notify the other players on your court if you are going to be late. Each league session runs seven weeks and there are four sessions per year. There is a two to three week break over the Christmas holiday season and a week long break in the Spring to coincide with March Break.

Tuesday night has five divisions (A to E), with 8 to 10 players in each division. Wednesday night typically varies between two to four divisions, depending on the number of participants. In some circumstances, certain divisions on either night may be split between the two time slots so you may not play at the same time every week. This is especially true at the end of each session when players move between divisions. Please use the schedule to make sure you are showing up at the appropriate time.

If you are unable to participate in league during a specific week, players are responsible for finding their own subs. There is an extensive sub list included with the house league schedule. Please also draw from other participants who play during the other time slot or on another evening. Do not pull a no show. Not only is it unfair and inconsiderate to the other three players on your court, but it will also prevent you from moving up, should you have one of the two highest scores in a session. If you can not play and can not find a sub, call the other three players on your court and reschedule for another date.

Eight players from each division play every week. If there are more than eight players in the division, one or more players will have a bye each week. In the event that you need a sub, it is recommended that you contact this person first. If you are aware of a week that you will not be able to play, prior to the distribution of the house league schedule, please notify the convener well in advance and he will make every effort to accommodate requests. Requests are on a first come first serve basis. If the schedule has already been disseminated, bye weeks will not be changed, however players may switch bye weeks with other players on their own initiative. It is a good idea to mark a bye week switch on the score sheets in the clubhouse so other players are aware.

Every week you will play with/against three other members in your division. You will play three sets, switching partners between each set. Keep track of the number of games you win each week, as they will be used to tabulate your score. Players are responsible for recording their own scores on the score sheet posted on the bulletin board inside the clubhouse. Please make sure you mark your scores (legibly) every week. The convener uses these scores to determine who moves up and down at the end of each session.

If a player misses an entire session and wishes to rejoin the league, he will join the league in the same division that he left. However, if a player leaves for a session and said player would have moved down or up if he had stayed, the player will rejoin the league in the lower or higher division, respectively.

The format on Wednesday night varies slightly from Tuesday in that for each 7 week session you play with the same partner and compete as a team for the entire 7 week session.  Wednesday night typically varies between two to four divisions, depending on the number of participants.  Like Tuesday night play, each match is 3 sets and scoring is based on the cumulative number of games won by each team in the 3 set match.  As each session re-starts you are able to continue with the same partner or play with someone new.  The main difference in the two league formats is that it allows for a given team to learn to work together more effectively by playing together each week.  It  can also serve as a more effective introduction to the game for a new player as you can rely on your partner to help instruct with strategy and some other basic nuances that distinguish the game from other racquet sports.  For anyone interested in playing on Wednesday nights the league convenor will do their best to find a suitable partner if you don’t otherwise have one.

Every member is able to play in both the Tuesday and Wednesday night formats, and the general conduct applies for both evenings in that each player is responsible for finding a substitute should you be unable to attend a match.

Women's League Format

The ladies follow a similar format to the Tuesday night men's league. Beginners and intermediates play on Monday evening and then progress to more advanced play on Thursday nights.

League Scoring Rules (Men and Women)

  1. After each seven-week session, each player’s total score is calculated using the best five scores. If a player does not achieve five scores, than an average score is calculated. It is advised that players attempt to reach the seven score maximum per session, as typically everyone has a bad week that they would not like to count. Rules to help players achieve at least five weeks are as follows:
    • A league participant who subs for another player in the same division can use that score in a week that he does not already have a score. For example, if you sub during your bye week, you may use that score, but only in a week that you do not already have a score. You may not use a sub score to replace an existing score.
    • The above rule also applies if you sub in a more difficult division than the division you normally play in. You may not use a sub score if you subbed in a lower division.
  2. The above two rules also apply if you played twice in the same night. You must use your score from your actual scheduled league match; however you may also apply the score from the sub to a week where you did not already have a score. At the end of each session, the top two players typically move up and the bottom two move down in each division. New entrants and returning players to the league take precedence and may prevent two players from moving up and/or down each week. For example, if an “A” player returns to league after a prolonged absence, only one “B” player would move up.
  3. In the event of a tie, the tie breakers are used under the following hierarchy:
    • If both players have six or seven scores, the sixth, and if needed seventh, best scores are compared.
    • If one or both players have fewer than five scores, the top three or four scores are compared.
    • Head to head scores are compared when players are on the same court.
    • Coin toss/Bribe convener.

Obviously the scoring rules are based on an honour system. It is to the benefit of the league and membership that the rules are followed and scores are recorded accurately.

Ladies Thursday Paddle Round Robin takes place at 9AM on Thursdays and is open to ladies of all skill levels.
